I'll confess - I came to the Kaldheim pre-release kit long after pre-release season (in fact, even after Strixhaven became available...)
But, if you can get pre-release kits on pre-order - they're worth the effort. For a start, they come with spindown life counters. Not, in previous environments, the most attractive proposition - but with Adventures in the Forgotten Realms due to hit the shelves, including a number of cards reliant on the spin of a d20 - well, you can see how suddenly spindowns make more sense to have, in quantity!
And for the most part, if you can lay your hands on six kits - you've effectively got a draft booster box a week before the official release of the set. Plenty of time to inspect the cards and work out how they can help (or hinder...) your existing decks, suggest ideas for new directions - and get ready for what you may face the next time you play.
Add to that a pre-release specific foil goodie, stamped with the date of the pre-release event. That probably works better as a memento of an actual pre-release event, but still, it's a foil rare or mythic which can add to what you already have.
The other great thing about recent pre-releases is the inclusion of a card with a code unlocking six packs from the set on MTG:Arena. Digital play is another great way to test strategies against real-world opponents - and Arena gets the release a week in advance of the real-world release, so while I wouldn't recommend using it after the official release date, it's a good way of finding out what you're likely to encounter.
And... It comes in a re-usable deck box! What, here, is not to love?
A note on service:
Athena are brilliant - really helpful and responsive if you need help. Plus, keep an eye on what they have available - their offers are often the best around. Interestingly, considering I used to live in the area, two of my go-tos for Magic products are Zatu and now Athena - both based within, at a guess, 2-3 miles of each other. They're both really great, but for service, and insanely good deals, Athena have the edge. They're my best-kept secret - hopefully, until now.
