Description

Long, long ago, the Emperor of China offered the Emperor of Japan a Giant Panda in a gesture of peace. You have been appointed to the delicate task of caring for this politically-important Panda and tending to the Emperor’s illustrious bamboo garden. You must cultivate plots of land using irrigation and intelligence so that bamboo, the only food that the Panda will eat, grows in abundance. But beware of the sacred animal’s uncontrollable appetite for crunchy young sprouts…

Cultivate the land, grow the bamboo, feed the panda, and prove yourself worthy of the Emperor’s trust in Takenoko!

This one's been on my radar for a while and I picked it up in-store on a whim. The gameplay is great, the rules are a little ambiguous about certain things, ie the wording on certain things is confusing, specifically the shoots/sections of bamboo, and it seems like people online also feel confused. Some people say the Panda CAN eat the shoots and some say he can only eat the sections, we've decided decided to play with the shoots never leaving the board and only the stacked sections of bamboo being up for grabs, it seems to make more sense that way even though the rules don't specify. Also, the version I got seems to be a newer edition, as such the tiles for fertiliser, watershed and enclosure have changed to a polo shaped disc, but the box has no changed to accomodate their new design, they still have the section to add the hex tiles instead! So you have to awkwardly store them with the irrigation pieces. At first I thought I was missing something and had to Google it. The box definitely is a major fail, but the gameplay itself is fun, easy to learn and has a lot of simple strategy making it ideal for the entire family! Definitely worth the money and is frequently played on game nights.
